Psychotherapy and Counselling with men

Working with men in psychotherapy

I have a special interest in and sensitivity for psychological work with men of all ages.

A lot of the men I work with seek counselling or therapy following painful life events. Frequently these events involve the embarrassing discovery of a hidden behaviour such as an affair or some other form of acting out.

Sometimes an ultimatum has been given by a partner regarding a particular behaviour such as uncontrolled anger and aggression.

We know for certain that, in general, men are far more likely to “double down” and “push through” difficult situations than they are to seek help and I believe this is a significant reason as to why it appears, at least anecdotally, than men are more reluctant to come into therapy. It also suggests a reason as to why there is so often a shocking or dramatic event in our professional or personal lives that eventually brings us into the therapy room.

Just as frequently however and particularly in recent years, men come into psychotherapy and seek counselling of their own accord to seek relief from distress or to discuss a troubling experience or concern.

Specific work areas

I work with a variety of difficulties typically encountered by men

Relationship issues

I work with men confronting difficult relationship issues including the ending of marriage and the renogotiation of central life roles related to that. Parenting after a divorce, relating to ex-partners can require careful consideration and a positive counselling and therapeutic relationship can be a useful tool in this process.

I have also assisted men facing decisions about relationships who are struggling to reconcile to the behaviour of a partner or child.

Psychotherapy can also assist with feelings of inadequacy and powerlessness.

Aggression and rage

Anger, aggression and uncontrolled rage are often parts of the male experience and can have profound impacts on self and other. I work with men to understand and master these impulses in a non-punitive and positive way.

Male sexuality

Sex is central in the male psyche and is very available to us as a vehicle to soothe and carry emotional concerns.

It’s effects on our lives can as destructive as they can be overwhelmingly positive. How often do we hear stories of men who have it and who’s lives are thrown into chaos by sexual acting our and indiscretion? I work with men to understand and reconcile the powerful and often complex context of male sexuality.

I believe my therapeutic approach is in general, direct, sensitive and practical. Read more about me here.
